Visualizing the Liberation of Mind and Body: Branding Web Design for a Relaxation Salon

In 2007, amidst a rapid surge in interest toward personal lifestyles and wellness, and when websites were increasingly expected to deliver elements of a “simulated experience” moving beyond mere storefront directories, we constructed the official website for the Taiwanese-style reflexology salon “relax & rebody ASILE.” The word Asile signifies a “sanctuary” or “refuge”—a place to step away from the urban bustle and reset both mind and body. In this project, the ultimate theme was how to reconcile and express within a digital space the high-end, healing atmosphere provided by the salon alongside a sense of trust toward its Taiwanese-style reflexology, which represents a “logical treatment technique that fundamentally aligns bodily functions.” While staying close to the serene tone and manners held by the salon, this creative case study pursued a clean and functional user interface (UI) that does not obstruct user actions such as reservations and access inquiries.

A Stress-Free UX Engineered Through “Whitespace” and “Seamless Flows”

The highest priority in the design process was a noise-free, minimal screen layout (UX) where the user’s “relaxation experience” begins from the exact moment they access the site. On the homepage, we adopted a left menu (vertical navigation) that tidily positions fixed navigation elements (HOME, ABOUT ASILE, NEWS, SALON MENU, etc.) on the left side. In the broad area on the right, we boldly laid out a horizontal imagery photograph of white flowers and aroma salts that evokes the salon’s treatment space. By executing a “design of subtraction” that thoroughly strips away redundant decorations and complex text, a beautiful whitespace (negative space) is generated across the entire screen, constructing a visual effect that intuitively evokes the “feeling of liberation” and “luxurious time” demanded by modern people.

Key Creative Highlights of This Project

  • A “Salon Menu” Layout Fostering Trust and Peace of Mind: On the menu details page (asile_002-2.jpg), the mechanism of “Taiwanese-style reflexology”—which stimulates the reflex zones of the feet to improve blood circulation and lymphatic flow—is explained through meticulous copywriting and clean photographs of the treatment environment. Organically structuring service breakdowns such as durations, pricing, and foot baths based on a grid, we applied an information architecture (IA) that allows first-time guests to choose with confidence.
  • Brand Construction Through a Consistent Tone and Manners: We selected a quiet, near-monotone color palette based on white, featuring a calm light gray and assigning black to the fonts (lettering). To avoid disrupting the sophisticated script typeface nuances possessed by the salon logo, we precisely controlled the font weights and whitespace balance across the entire system, establishing an identity as a sophisticated hideaway salon.
  • Simple and Clear “Access” Guidance Elevating Objective Achievement Rates: On the “ACCESS” page, we created a specialized original map (surrounding map) to facilitate an intuitive grasp of the route from the business district of Kajicho, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo (the vicinity of JR Kanda Station and Tokyo Metro Ginza Line Kanda Station). Narrowing down station exits and landmark spots, and utilizing a color scheme mindful of contrast, we achieved superior visibility that allows guests to arrive at the shop without getting lost, even in the environment prior to the widespread proliferation of smartphones.

A Fusion of Functional Beauty and Emotional Design Unaffected by Trends

The construction of this website stands as a project proving that visual beauty in web design is not mere decoration, but a “function to accurately communicate a company’s concept to its clientele.” Despite shifts in technology, the essence of design—providing the information sought in the shortest path possible while letting users feel a sense of “comfort”—remains unchanged. Optimizing ASILE’s universal philosophy of “enhancing natural healing powers and supporting the creation of a body resistant to illness” for digital media, we achieved a logical yet emotional web design that elevates brand reliability.
