Digital Archives Transmitting Product Energy: 2002 FUJIFILM FinePix Product Site
Fusing Innovative Technology and Brand Experience
In the early 2000s, the digital camera market entered a period of explosive proliferation, where pixel count competitions and proprietary image processing technologies held the fate of each manufacturer. Against this backdrop, I was in charge of the web design and production for product introductions of FUJIFILM Corporation’s digital camera brand “FinePix.” In this project, the core of the design was balancing an “intuitive understanding of technological superiority” with a “brand experience that arouses the desire to shoot.” The biggest challenge was how to deliver highly specialized technologies that FUJIFILM prides itself on—such as the proprietary “Super CCD Honeycomb” and image processing systems—to end-users in an easy-to-understand manner that also builds professional expectations. Rather than a mere enumeration of catalog specifications, we structured through visuals and layouts the benefits of what kind of “images” could be captured by holding that camera.Information Hierarchization and the Pursuit of Usability
The web browsing environments of that era had constraints regarding display resolutions and communication speeds. Even within those limitations, we executed information architecture combining high-definition product graphics with sophisticated typography to maximize the transmission of product textures and high-image-quality performance. By utilizing a common navigation fixed on the left side, we adopted a structure that allows seamless circulation across a diverse lineup, ensuring users can effortlessly find the model best suited for them. On each product page, positioning high-quality product photographs in the center and clearly partitioning functional explanations by section fostered a narrative composition where understanding of the product deepens as the user scrolls. Furthermore, components directly tied to conversion—such as support information, related accessories, and catalog downloads—are aggregated into the right sidebar. This elevated convenience for all stakeholders, from prospective buyers to existing users, pursuing functionality as a product site to the absolute limit. The Core of Design and IA (Information Architecture) in This Project
- Utilizing Icons and Illustrations Visualizing Proprietary Technical Brands: Positioning precise visuals tailored to unique technical names like “Super CCD Honeycomb” and “Honeycomb Zoom,” visually emphasizing differentiation from competitors.
- Color Management Making Product Individuality Stand Out: Selecting optimal main visuals tailored to the target audience of each model, such as the casualness of the E550, the sophisticated compactness of the F810, and the DSLR-style power of the S5000/S7000.
- Constructing a Consistent Product Introduction Framework: Engineering a flexible layout design capable of highlighting each model’s features (boot speed, LCD monitor performance, grip hold, etc.) while unifying tone and manners across the entire series.
- Comprehensive Information Architecture Supporting Purchase and Utilization Processes: Providing a UX that connects the before and after of the shooting experience, including not only detailed specifications but also sample output cases and guidance to post-shooting print services.
The Significance of Design
The FinePix product site back in 2002 can be called an example of supporting through design the process of digital cameras sublimating from “consumer electronics” into “tools for self-expression.” We aimed to translate FUJIFILM’s sincere posture toward technology and its history of supporting photographic culture into a clean, reliable web design. The role of a product site does not stop at presenting information, but lies in sharing an enterprise’s passion for craftsmanship with its users. The approach cultivated in this project—organizing complex information and visualizing the “soul” of a product—holds universal value across the design of any digital product today, serving as one of the origins of the engineering philosophy at MARZ DESIGN.■ 本WEBサイトに掲載されている、会社名、商品名、サービス名、ブランド名、ロゴマーク、サービスマーク、スローガン、キャッチコピー等の著作権・商標権は、各権利所有者に帰属します。
