    「Piano motion pictures」

Exploring Motion Pictures That Visualize Auditory Experiences

This is a creative case study of the experimental motion picture “Piano motion pictures,” produced as part of a self-promotion initiative for a lecture hosted by Adobe. The theme set for this project was “perfect synchronicity between sound and video” in visual expression. Moving beyond mere direction that animates visuals to match music, the process of interpreting the physical vibrations of a piano and the mechanisms of sound synthesis (synthesizers) from a graphic design perspective, and reconstructing them as motion graphics, was systematized as lecture instructional material. To logically explain methods of constructing the passage of time and rhythm in digital visual expression, abstract geometric elements and minimal typography were adopted. The project verified the creation of a synesthetic user experience (UX) where viewers perceive sound as “visuals” and video as “auditory input.”

The Rationale Behind Visual Thinking Based on Psychoacoustics and Timeline Control

  • Keyframe Animation Applying Synthesizer Parameters (ADSR)
The concept of “ADSR (Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release),” which illustrates the temporal changes of a sound from its initiation to its fading, was directly reflected in the dynamic characteristics (easing curves) of the motion. The sharp attack caused by striking a piano key was represented with a steep Bézier curve, while the dampening of the lingering resonance was visualized as a gentle delay. This established a method that logically links acoustic physical phenomena with keyframe values.
  • Zoning and Scaling of Graphic Elements Synchronizing with Frequency Bands (Pitch)
The profound resonance of the low-frequency range was assigned to thick lines and large rectangular objects (conveying mass), while the delicate melodies of the high-frequency range were mapped to fine dots and high-speed concentric circles (conveying buoyancy). By designing a system where the placement (zoning) and size (scaling) of graphics shift dynamically according to changes in pitch, the structure of a musical score was three-dimensionally transformed onto a three-dimensional timeline.
  • A High-Contrast Monotone and Color Scheme Creating Tension and Release
The visual keynote was composed of a jet black and pure white monotone, paying homage to the contrast structure inherent in piano keys. Only at the exact moment a sound is unleashed from silence, geometric objects of vivid colors (such as cyan, magenta, and yellow) were inserted into the layout like an equalizer. This maximized the visual dynamic range (the breadth of light, shade, and color) and enhanced the eye-catching effect when projected onto a screen during the lecture.
  • Narrative Expression via Deconstruction and Reconstruction of Typography
Treating the text “Piano motion pictures” and symbols themselves as design components (objects), we deployed motion graphics where characters deconstruct, flicker, and realign via the impulse (shockwave) of sound. Moving beyond the role of a signifier that conveys the meaning of words, we pursued an editorial visual beauty where the strokes and weights of the characters themselves function as instruments keeping the rhythm.

A Summary of Animation Design as Instructional Material for Visual Education

The primary objective of presenting this work during the lecture hosted by Adobe was to encourage students to shift “from intuitive video production to logical motion design.” Using actual video sequences (chronological images), we demonstrated the importance of giving a clear rationale of thought (why it moves at that speed and in that direction) to every pixel and frame within a composition. In an era where visual expression is becoming excessively complex, this project—which delved into the fundamental “relationship between sound and form” through a minimal approach—functioned as a comprehensive sample case for learning the basic theories of motion graphics. Transcending mere visual beauty, it culminated as an advanced self-promotion case study that clearly demonstrates how design thinking brings order and persuasiveness to moving images.
