Brand Identity Evolving Beyond Time and “Captivating” Information Architecture: “Rumours website 2007”

In 1995, “Rumours Co., Ltd.”—a long-established florist developing sophisticated fresh flower decorations in Ebisu, Tokyo—opened its official website, becoming a pioneer of storefront websites at the dawn of the internet. Twelve years later in 2007, receiving the paradigm shift of enhanced PC hardware specifications and the complete establishment of broadband environments (the spread of always-on connections), a comprehensive full renewal project was executed. This project, “Rumours website 2007,” is an example of branding, UI/UX design, and website construction that looks toward the next era of the store. The greatest theme of this renewal lay in delivering the overwhelming creativity as a fresh flower decoration designer and the “textures” of beautiful flowers that change expressions from time to time to users more dynamically and abundantly, while protecting the robust identity inherited from the first-generation site. Steering the course from the “aesthetics of subtraction” of the narrowband era to a “captivating experience design” that makes the most of resources, we constructed an information architecture that enhanced the expressive power of the web front-end.

Inheriting the Symbolic Orange and a Grid System Making Photographs the Main Actor

Upon the renewal, what we prioritized most was not interrupting brand recognition (maintaining brand equity). Therefore, the vibrant “orange” corporate color, which was the greatest characteristic of the first-generation website and the identity of Rumours, is firmly inherited as the background color. On the other hand, what differs vastly from twelve years prior is the degree of freedom in image sizes and resolutions that can be displayed. We evolved the site into a gallery structure that can abundantly arrange a wide variety of portfolio photographs handled by the store—such as wedding decorations, space displays, and seasonal arrangements—as if flipping through a high-quality art book. The orange background, while releasing a powerful individuality on its own, functions as a canvas that modernly highlights the vividness of the greens and multi-colored flowers within the photographs by being combined with a minimal layout pattern (grid system) that leaves boundaries unperceived. By thoroughly eliminating useless ornamental frames and positioning the visuals themselves as the main actor of the interface, we logically designed a UX (user experience) where users can intuitively immerse themselves in the “beauty of fresh flowers” and the “technical capabilities of the designer.”

Navigation and Customer Experience Reconciling the “Joy of Searching” and “Scannability”

Merely arranging abundant portfolio photographs in a disorganized manner increases cognitive load for users and causes confusion (drop-outs). Therefore, we allocated global navigation driven by sophisticated typography at the top of the screen, while smartly housing intuitive content category paths on the bottom and sides. Users can smoothly transition back and forth between menus such as “Wedding,” “Arrangement,” and “Store Guide” aligned with their own purposes. Through a sequence of interactions like scrolling and clicking, they obtain a comfortable reading aftertaste (customer experience) as if gazing at the flowers lined up in the Ebisu store. Furthermore, access to the physical store (the location near Ebisu Garden Place) and access to the inquiry form are allocated at the shortest layer, completing a site structure that seamlessly binds aesthetic branding with business conversions (behavioral guidance) such as ordering flower gifts or requesting decorations.

Core UI/UX Design Values in “Rumours website 2007”

In this renewal, the specialized approaches executed to further elevate the brand’s value are as follows:
  • Sustained Brand Evolution Core-Centered on Corporate Color: While inheriting the symbolic orange background, reconstructing it into a modern layout balance reconciles reliability as a long-established store with advanced capabilities.
  • Gallery UI Maximizing Visual Potential: Centering abundant portfolio photographs optimized for broadband environments realizes a design that transmits the fine textures and colors of flowers without degradation.
  • Clear Information Architecture Prompting User Exploration Behaviors: Organizing wide-ranging production tracks (fresh flower decorations) fuses visual beauty and practical paths (O2O and store visit promotion) at a high level.

Connecting the Context and Designing Future Experiences

The full renewal of “Rumours website 2007” is a milestone project that correctly updated the design philosophy (the “why”) established at the time of opening in 1995 to match the evolution of technology. Rather than simply chasing new trends, the approach of understanding the history and unique context possessed by a brand and correctly anchoring it into the digital space is the very essence of rebranding in modern web design. At MARZ DESIGN, moving beyond superficial visual updates in this manner, we consistently provide “evidence-based design” that inherits brand colors and philosophies—which are corporate assets—to strike a deep chord with target users. From constructing portfolio sites that maximize storefront value to renewing brand sites with unique concepts, we support experience designs that contribute to business growth from a one-stop framework.
