SUNTORY e-wine website 2001: A Pioneering Construction of One of Japan’s Largest Digital Wine Archives and UX

In the early 2000s, during the transitional period when Japan’s internet environment was shifting from dial-up to broadband, “e-wine,” deployed by Suntory Co., Ltd. (currently Suntory Holdings Limited), was designed as a “hub of wine culture” that transcended the boundaries of a mere e-commerce site. In the digital marketing of that era, a platform that fused such a massive database with high-quality content based on on-site coverage was an extremely rare existence. In this project, we were in charge of UI/UX design and overall site operations, focusing our efforts on constructing a “comprehensive digital experience encompassing wine information from around the world” from the perspective of information architecture (IA).

Information Architecture and Visual Expression Balancing Functionality with Emotional Appeal

  • Advanced Grid System and UI Design Organizing an Overwhelming Volume of Information: To enable users to navigate vast wine information from various regions worldwide without confusion, we constructed an interface based on a strict grid system. The UI, which allowed intuitive operation of multifaceted search criteria—such as origin, variety, price range, and taste indicators—served as a pioneer for standard functions found on modern wine e-commerce sites. By visually clarifying the hierarchical structure of information, we achieved a high-level balance between robustness as a specialized database and ease of use for general users.
  • Thorough Commitment to Realism and Asset Production: The photos of several thousand types of wine bottles published on the site were all taken using actual products. Even as digital images, we secured credibility as an e-commerce site by faithfully replicating the texture of the bottles, the details of the etiquettes (labels), and the color tones of the liquid. This design integrity of “conveying the real thing” stimulated users’ desire to purchase, ultimately serving as the driving force behind achieving top-tier sales in Japan at the time.
  • On-Site Feature Articles as a Pioneer of Content Marketing: Moving beyond a simple product catalog, we integrated a massive collection of interview articles reporting on local terroirs and the passion of producers from wine regions across the globe. To optimize these rich contents as reading material, we controlled typography and margins, deploying editorial design techniques on the web to allow long articles to be read without stress. This realized a UX that simultaneously enhanced information reliability and brand value.
  • Scalable Site Structure Designed for Continuous Operations: To efficiently manage the massive, daily-updated database and articles, we constructed a site operation system equipped with scalability. Designing an operational workflow that maintained the design’s tone and manners while keeping information fresh became an initiative that symbolized the importance of design systems in large-scale web services.

Proving the “Power of Design” during the Dawn of the Digital Era

The success of this project became a case study demonstrating how appropriate information architecture and attention to detail contribute to business results (sales) and brand building. At the time, there was no other site that comprehensively aggregated worldwide wine information to this extent, and e-wine became something of a scripture for Japanese wine lovers. The visual stability based on the golden ratio and mathematical logic, along with a design philosophy that minimizes cognitive load when users retrieve information, remain universal values unchanged even in today’s modern web design. The fusion of “organizing complex information” and “emotionally appealing storytelling” within a large-scale platform. The experience with e-wine stands as a critical origin that shapes the “why (the rationale behind the thinking)” in my subsequent design work.
