“Tokyu Winter Gift” as a Visual Device Coloring Spaces: Video Design Optimized for Large-Scale Displays

Pursuing a “Non-Verbal Approach” in Commercial Facilities and Transportation Hubs

This project involved the production of a promotional video for the year-end and winter gift-giving shopping season. The greatest characteristic of this project lay in the premise that the produced video was not intended for personal devices like TV commercials or social media, but was to be broadcasted on “large-scale displays” installed within commercial facilities and transportation hubs. Digital signage in public spaces (DOOH: Digital Out of Home) demands “pure visual appeal” that instantly captures the gaze of passersby and transmits information without relying on audio. Particularly in introducing winter gifts centered around high-end ingredients, the core of the creativity was how to sublimate the freshness, texture, and season-specific warmth of the ingredients into a sense of “sizzle” on a high-resolution, large screen.
  • Information Architecture and Typography Premised on a “Silent Environment”
On large-scale displays situated in the midst of bustle, audio supplementation cannot be expected. Therefore, we constructed highly readable typography and a high-contrast color palette to instantly communicate that it is a “winter gift” even from a distance, without undermining the brand image of Tokyu Department Store. To complement the appeal of premium ingredients, we adopted a minimal layout that utilizes white space, arranging the motion of textual information in a logical sequence calculated to guide the viewer’s gaze.
  • Cut-Away Framing and Speed of Thought to Win the “1.5-Second Battle”
How much “deliciousness” can be left in the memory during the brief moment a passerby walks past the signage? To address this challenge, we rejected a conventional storytelling style, instead adopting rapid cut-aways based on a grid system and fast-paced transitions utilizing smooth easing. By introducing multiple high-end ingredients through a fluid dynamic design rather than showing them flatly on a single surface, we eliminated visual stress while enhancing the comprehensiveness of information.
  • Maximizing the Sizzle Factor Compatible with High-Definition Devices
To leverage the specific resolution of large-scale displays, we paid meticulous attention to color correction (color grading). By emphasizing the deep colors possessed by premium ingredients and utilizing warm lighting effects fitting for a winter gift, we focused on transmitting “texture” through the screen. Dropping the visuals into a presentation that evokes the joy of receiving a gift, we ensured it did not end up as a mere sequence of still images, but as a “presentation with a timeline” unique to motion pictures.

The Logic of Design: Why a “Functional Sense of Tempo” Was Necessary

The role of creativity in design begins with understanding the characteristics of the medium. In this winter gift video, what I emphasized most was the “quality of the brand experience in a space with short dwell times.” Unlike commercials watched while sitting in front of a television, large displays in transportation hubs exist within “movement.” In such environments, lengthy narrations or complex contexts do not function. The rationale for the design was the balance between “dynamic anomaly” when entering a human’s peripheral vision and “information organization” when captured by the central vision. The ingredient footage introduced with a good tempo becomes a rhythm in itself, intended to engrave the department store’s sophisticated selection into the passerby’s subconscious. Regrettably, this project remained at the trial operation stage and did not lead to widespread permanent adoption. However, regarding how digital video can serve as a “visual trigger” to connect with the concrete action of purchasing intent while harmonizing with spaces in “public areas” like commercial facilities, the design methodology and technical implementation yielded a solid response as an effective prototype for next-generation DOOH advertising. Locking the thoughts of the “giver” and the elation of the “receiver” into high-definition video motion. I am proud to say that this entire production process was an exploration of graphic design as a spatial staging element, transcending mere video production.
