Broadcasting Kawasaki’s Urban Image to the World: Editorial Design for the English Public Relations Brochure “a guide to KAWASAKI”
Project Background and Objectives
This project involved the editorial design for “a guide to KAWASAKI,” an English brochure created to promote the charms of Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture, to an international audience. Kawasaki is a unique city with an elongated terrain stretching along the Tama River, adjacent to the two major metropolises of Tokyo and Yokohama. While building on its historical roots as a manufacturing town at the core of the Keihin Industrial Zone, the city has transformed into an international city of science and culture where advanced technologies converge. The greatest challenge in this production was how to organize and present Kawasaki’s multifaceted elements—its historical context, industrial dynamism, and vision for the future—to overseas stakeholders in a highly visible and reliable format. Rather than a mere tourist guide, we pursued value as a professional medium that conveys the city’s potential for business, investment, and residential living.Design Concept: Merging Multilayered Information with Dynamism
On the visual front, we adopted the concept of “layers,” which symbolizes Kawasaki’s urban structure. For the cover design, we arranged disparate fragmentary scenes—the night views of the industrial zone, modern skyscrapers, rich greenery, and citizens’ daily lives—like a collage. By overlaying these onto background map data, we visualized the urban density and the simultaneous existence of diverse activities. For the page layout, targeting native English readers and the international business community, we adopted highly readable sans-serif typography and a grid system that clarifies information priorities. By contrasting the use of bold whitespace that evokes the vast sky and the flow of the Tama River with detailed explanatory text, we constructed an editorial flow that allows readers to touch the core of the information without stress.Key Focus Points in Production
- Visual Storytelling Narrating Urban Evolution: By juxtaposing ukiyo-e prints with modern skylines, the transition from an Edo-period post town to a modern high-tech industrial city intuitively communicates historical continuity and rapid development.
- Structuring Complex Geographical and Industrial Characteristics: Explaining with an orderly layout the respective characteristics of the seven wards (Kawasaki, Saiwai, Nakahara, Takatsu, Miyamae, Tama, and Asao) and the convenience generated by the JR Nambu Line traversing the city alongside five intersecting private railways.
- Commitment to the “Information Epoch”: Establishing a brand image as a next-generation city by highlighting its strengths as an R&D hub, such as the Kanagawa Science Park (KSP) and Technopia.
- Textures and Reliability as a Print Medium: Paying meticulous attention to tactile sensations and color reproducibility when holding the document, we balanced the dignity appropriate for public institutional materials with modern graphic expressions compliant with global standards.
Redefining Urban Branding Through Design
“A GUIDE TO KAWASAKI” moved beyond a mere list of information; it was an attempt to package the energy and future potential possessed by Kawasaki City. How to capture the dynamism of this city—which has surpassed a population of 1.56 million and continues to grow—within a static paper medium. Through the methodology of editorial design, we focused on converting facts (data) into value (brand). We aim for this brochure to serve as a new touchpoint with Kawasaki City for people worldwide, helping support the further internationalization of the city.■ 本WEBサイトに掲載されている、会社名、商品名、サービス名、ブランド名、ロゴマーク、サービスマーク、スローガン、キャッチコピー等の著作権・商標権は、各権利所有者に帰属します。
