Rumours website 2017: Branding and UI Design Visualizing “Floral Sculpting” Trusted by Professionals

Since its founding in 1893, Rumours Co., Ltd. has established a solid position in Ebisu (Shibuya-ku, Tokyo) as a “florist favored by industry insiders.” In restructuring the website for this store, which has earned the immense trust of “professionals” with highly stringent aesthetic standards—including musicians, creators, and fashion figures—the greatest mission was determining how to highly integrate the analog excitement of the physical store with digital convenience. We established a visual identity to intuitively convey Rumours’ technical capabilities, which have long supported the backstages of glamorous settings like movies, TV commercials, and exhibitions, to general customers. Moving beyond a simple store introduction, the design is logically grounded in cultivating a sense of trust that makes users feel “I can leave it to them without hesitation” at a single glance.

Optimizing Experience Value by Intentional Non-EC Adaptation, Preserving the “Joy of Choosing”

In this project, we intentionally eliminated the option of a “fully automated EC site,” which is a recent trend. This was a strategic decision to preserve the “sense of live interaction that responds to each individual customer’s requests,” an aspect that Rumours holds dear. Placing top priority on a user experience (UX) that connects seamlessly with brick-and-mortar operations, we designed the platform around the following key pillars:
  • Building an Archive of Hundreds of “Floral Styles” Across 12 Categories: We published a vast archive of work achievements classified into 12 categories, ranging from flower arrangements and weddings to stand flowers, farewell services, and dressing room flowers. This functions not as a mere gallery, but as a powerful communication tool to share “floral concepts” that are otherwise difficult to verbalize with users. By organizing high-definition visuals within a grid layout, we achieved an interface that allows users to intuitively grasp Rumours’ sculptural beauty.
  • Implementing a Dialogue-Focused, Email-Based Ordering System: We intentionally avoided a standard shopping cart system and adopted an email ordering format capable of conveying detailed nuances. This makes it possible to maintain the quality of a “full custom order” tailored to the recipient’s image or purpose, even via the web. By designing a user flow that evokes a conversation with the “floral professional” waiting on the other side rather than finalizing actions entirely digitally, we prevent mismatches and aim to enhance customer satisfaction.
  • Dynamic Integration with Instagram for High-Freshness Information Sharing: To deliver real-time updates on seasonal flowers and the latest creations changing day by day, we integrated a feed display utilizing the Instagram API. This constantly breathes the atmosphere of the “now” into website content that tends to become static, sharing the actual timeline flowing at the Ebisu storefront in the digital space. Consequently, we coexisted the authority of an official website with the friendliness and freshness unique to social media.

Essential Design Becoming an Asset That Supports the Brand’s “Next 30 Years”

Rumours’ brand power has been cultivated over many years in a quiet area of Ebisu, diagonally opposite the Maison Franco-Japonaise. Its essence lies in “reliable techniques recognized by professionals” and “attention to detail.” For this web design production, we stripped away excessive decoration and adopted a minimal user interface (UI) that leverages negative space, ensuring the colors and forms of the main attraction—the flowers—stand out most beautifully. In search engine optimization (SEO), alongside local keywords like “Ebisu florist” and “Ebisu Garden Place florist,” we structured and positioned highly specialized keywords such as “dressing room flowers Ebisu,” “ikekomi (flower installation) Ebisu,” and “exhibition/display Ebisu.” This enables precise targeting for both BtoB and BtoC segments with specific intents. Accurately translating solid brick-and-mortar craftsmanship within the digital world of 0s and 1s. As a result of this logical approach, we completed a sustainable platform that is user-friendly for existing fans and leaves a vivid impression of Rumours’ worldview on new customers.
