Pioneering Web Design for a Music Project, Fusing an Emotional Worldview with Digital Media

In 1998, an era when the expressive power of the Internet was gradually expanding but text and low-resolution image layouts still remained the mainstream, we undertook the design development for the official website of the music project “cocoronet.” This project was an attempt to ground the creative activities deployed by Hawaii-based photographer, essayist, and artist Nick Kato and Parm Records, Inc. into a digital space. Linking with the “HAWAII Edition” of Itsuro Shimoda’s album “PARIS Yudama HAWAII,” we pursued an interface that graphically conveys the local atmosphere of Hawaii and the emotional stories encompassed by the music. Adopting a visual storytelling methodology conscious of the full screen—which was highly progressive for its time—this project aimed to construct a “web experience appealing to the five senses” rather than a mere enumeration of information.

UI/UX Engineering Based on Minimalism, Centering Aesthetic “Photography” and “Poetry”

What we emphasized most in the design process was seamlessly harmonizing on the web browser the vivid photographic beauty of Hawaii captured by Nick Kato with his poetic textual expression as an essayist. By adopting a black-based background frame, we aimed for a visual effect (contrast) that maximizes the colors of the photographs positioned in the center of the screen and heightens the user’s immersion. In the typography positioning text in the center of the screen, we meticulously controlled line spacing and character spacing (kerning), calculating an exquisite transparency and placement that does not interfere with the gradients of the photographs. Furthermore, on pages featuring emotional photographs of suspended pendants or glasswork, we engineered a layout where the light reflections of the objects resonate with the narrated episodes. Positioning a sophisticated navigation bar at a minimum size (About this contents / KOHARA Campaign Information / Close) at the bottom of the screen, we achieved a high-level balance between constructing the worldview and ensuring essential usability.

Key Creative Highlights of This Project

  • Immersive UX (User Experience) Driven by Full-Screen Visuals: Breaking away from the typical web design frameworks of the late 1990s (such as complex divisions using table layouts), we adopted a multimedia approach that dynamically showcases photographs in full screen. Keeping scrolling to an absolute minimum, we delivered an experiential value that is “static yet stimulates the five senses,” akin to admiring a single canvas.
  • Color & Layout Strategy Aligning with the Brand’s Tone and Manners: To avoid muddying the organic color tones inherent in Hawaiian nature (the reds and greens of tropical plants, the transparency of crystals), we unified the outer frame interface in an achromatic color (jet black). Furthermore, by adopting clean sans-serif typefaces (for English text) and highly legible Japanese fonts for the corporate/project logos and navigation lettering, we expressed an intelligence befitting a modern independent label.
  • A Pioneering Multimedia Attempt Connecting Music and Visuals: To straightforwardly convey the atmosphere of STUDIO KAHLA in Hawaii, the recording location for the album “PARIS Yudama HAWAII,” we deployed an information design that links the contexts of photography, text, and music into a single thread on the web. We practiced a conceptual UI design that serves as a forerunner to modern brand and portfolio sites.

Moving Beyond Digital Publishing: The Essence of Emotional Communication

The construction of this site was an extremely critical creative milestone during the transitional phase in the late 1990s when websites were evolving from “mere data search tools” into “expressive media for expanding artists’ philosophies and the worlds of their works.” Precisely because there were severe restrictions on communication environments and screen resolutions, we confronted the essence of graphic design—the “subtraction of elements” and “logical spatial composition”—successfully amplifying Nick Kato’s creativity to its maximum. Rather than excessively showing off trendy technology, we accurately translated the “lyrical worldview” held by the music project of our client, Parm Records, to users, realizing an emotional digital design that does not lose its universal value as art even when looked back upon today, nearly 30 years later.
