JAC AD 2001 Flyer:
JAC AD 2001 Flyer: Graphic Strategy for Brick-and-Mortar Openings Balancing Branding and Customer Acquisition
In the early 2000s automotive distribution industry, JAC Holdings Co., Ltd. (JAC > Livedoor Auto > Carchs, currently Redux Co., Ltd. (Carchs)) was expanding its business rapidly. This project involved the production of a newspaper insert and storefront distribution flyer advertisement to announce the grand opening of a new location for “JAC Blue Station,” the company’s service brand. Against the market backdrop of the time, the used car buying and selling industry was in a transitional phase toward becoming more familiar to general consumers. A major challenge was determining how to build brand credibility and accessibility rather than creating a mere “marketplace for buying and selling.” For this piece, I was in charge of the art direction and graphic design. While utilizing a base color scheme rooted in the client’s CI (Corporate Identity), we fused campaign elements that strongly drove new customer visits. Specifically, we focused on making the powerful hook of a Tokyo DisneySea pair-ticket giveaway function not as a mere “freebie,” but as a key visual that elevates the brand’s premium feel and sense of excitement.Building Sales Promotion and Brand Experience Through Strategic Information Design
- Color Management and Layout Balancing Visibility and Credibility: While placing blue—which symbolizes the brand name “Blue Station”—as the base color, we achieved both visual presence and a clean impression. Because the business handles high-value products like automobiles, we adopted an organized layout based on a grid system to visualize a “trustworthy corporate image,” setting it apart from loud, cheap discount advertisements. Practical information such as maps, phone numbers, and toll-free numbers are positioned with careful attention to usability for effortless access without compromising the design’s aesthetic appeal.
- Maximizing Customer Invitation (Call to Action) via Incentives: In announcing the highlight of the opening celebration, the “Tokyo DisneySea Pair-Ticket Giveaway,” we devised ways to lower the psychological barrier for the target audience. While putting the highly entertaining gift information at the forefront, we treated it as an entry point to the store’s “high-quality services,” harmonizing the excitement of amusement with the peace of mind required when trading vehicles within the graphics. This designed a smooth visual flow from the initial impact when holding the flyer to guiding the eye toward detailed store information.
- Practical Information Design Supporting Community-Based Marketing: Because the ultimate goal was driving traffic to a brick-and-mortar store, top priority was placed on local area recognition. We incorporated direct response advertising methodologies to increase response rates, such as a concise map design allowing nearby residents to intuitively grasp the location and emphasizing the toll-free number to facilitate inquiries. Through this, the piece coexists at a high level as both a branding advertisement that elevates image and a promotional flyer aimed at immediate customer acquisition.
Project Summary: Enduring Brand Value Brought by the Power of Design
The greatest achievement of this project lay in deeply etching the profile of the JAC Blue Station brand into the memory of the target audience, moving far beyond a standard “opening announcement.” In the highly competitive domain of automotive distribution, the initial impression consumers form regarding “cleanliness,” “scale,” and “security” serves as a critical asset that influences subsequent closing rates. During production, as an art director, I pursued logical grounding (design logic) to determine why specific colors, fonts, and placements move consumer minds. As a result, while leveraging a temporary trend-driven consumption trigger like a gift campaign, we succeeded in strongly impressing the store’s professionalism and reliability. This approach of “pursuing practical utility without sacrificing brand value,” cultivated in this 2001 project, remains the essence of design that must be prioritized consistently across today’s diverse media environments.
