A UX Strategy for One of Japan’s Largest Point Sites Visualizing the “Accumulating Experience”

In 2007, I was in charge of the web design project for “Eikyufumetsu.com,” a platform created by Credit Saison Co., Ltd. to help users accumulate their “Eikyufumetsu Points” (Permanent Immortal Points) more efficiently and enjoyably through online shopping. My responsibilities encompassed the art direction for the entire site and the web design of its primary pages. Serving as the predecessor to the current “Saison Point Mall,” this site was not a mere collection of links but functioned as an “experiential portal” that added new value to user purchasing behavior. The greatest challenge in this project lay in how to guarantee a sense of unity as a “Saison Card service” while maintaining the diverse individualities of hundreds of participating partner shop sites (such as Amazon, Rakuten, Belle Maison, etc.). It demanded thorough information architecture and a user interface that would make users perceive clear benefits in going through this site, encouraging them to utilize it as a hub for their everyday online shopping.

A UI Design Balancing the “Peace of Mind” and “Discovery” That Drive Purchasing Motivation

When utilizing point sites, the primary concerns for users are “Will points really be awarded?” and “Is it difficult to use?” To resolve this, we clearly allocated a path labeled “For First-Time Users” at the top of the site, explaining the mechanism of earning points step-by-step using illustrations and diagrams. By constructing an intuitive UX, we engineered ways to lower psychological barriers to the service. Furthermore, to organize the vast number of partner shops, we provided multifaceted search axes—such as “New Shops,” “By Point Multiplier,” and “In Alphabetical Order”—in addition to categorization by genre. This enabled access aligned with user purposeful intent. On the design front, positioning Saison Card’s brand color, blue, throughout the site staged a sense of trust appropriate for a site operated by a financial institution. On the other hand, to make the logos and banners of each shop stand out, clean white was adopted as the base color, minimizing informational noise.

“Information Structuring” Elevating User Navigation and the Origins of Multi-Device Compatibility

  • Optimizing the Visual Hierarchy: Highly convenient search and login functionalities are allocated at the top of the screen, campaign information is laid out in the center, and detailed category lists are positioned at the bottom. Aligning information naturally with eye movement achieved smooth navigation.
  • Information Architecture Highlighting “Point Multipliers”: On each shop’s details page and within lists, the point multipliers awarded are explicitly stated in a large red font. Emphasizing the maximum benefit for the user aimed to improve click-through rates.
  • A Consistent Navigation Framework: To prevent usability from degrading even as the number of shops increased, the ratio between the side menu and main content was fixed. Implementing breadcrumb navigation that allows users to grasp their current location from any hierarchy reflects a design philosophy specific to large-scale sites.
  • Global Standard Accessibility: While coexisting with the brands of numerous partner enterprises, we incorporated a universal design perspective to keep text sizes and link visibility high, ensuring that all users can enjoy the service equally.

Design Background: Why “Eikyufumetsu.com” Successfully Became a Hub

While competition was intensifying in the point site market at the time, Saison Card’s strength lay in the peace of mind offered by its “Eikyufumetsu” points, which have no expiration date. In design as well, rather than chasing temporary trends, we prioritized a “universal functional beauty” that could be used long-term. For instance, even for a single icon, we adopted metaphors whose meanings could be instantly understood, minimizing text explanations. Furthermore, beyond merely introducing shops, we designed a layout structure capable of flexibly deploying special feature pages aligned with seasonal events like “Father’s Day.” This consistently provided users with an expectation that “there is always a new discovery,” contributing to improved repeat rates. What I aimed for was the construction of a place where corporate business goals and user convenience intersect through a beautiful interface.

Project Summary: Designing the Foundation of Digital Marketing

This renewal in 2007 served as an important step for the digital marketing foundation that connects to the current Saison Point Mall. Organizing complex partnership relationships and vast amounts of data through the power of design, and converting them into “value” for the user—this process embodied the “evidence-based design” that MARZ DESIGN holds dear. On a platform with a massive user base, design is not mere decoration; it shapes the trust of the service itself. The engineering know-how for large-scale information portals cultivated in this project continues to serve as a major guidepost in my subsequent UI/UX design work.
